Arrived at Dauphin Island today to spend a few days and explore some of the sights. The island is basically a large sandbar that has military forts on either end. These forts were built by the Confederate Army to defend the Port of Mobile in Alabama. Many sea battles took place at these forts as the Union Army fought the Confederates to control the supplies brought into the port. Photos of the fort are below.
The water tower on Dauphin Island looks like a giant golf ball on a tee
Dauphin Island looks prehistoric with the tropical trees and swamps
Our puppies enjoying the white sandy beaches of the gulf
Wall-E looks like he's eating a rolled up piece of meat but it is actually his tongue
(funny looking)
Day 20,
Today we drove to Fort Gaines on the east end of Dauphin Island. This fort was established in 1821. The cannons used at the fort are enormous. They must have made an impressive sound when fired.
Cannon mount on the south side of the fort
These cannons were manually aimed and loaded
A better look at the cannon position
Community Outhouse
Blacksmith at work at the fort
This Anchor is HUGE. And to think this was hoisted up onto the ship manually. No electric or pneumatic hoists on Civil War era Ships
I would not want to be looking down the barrel of this cannon
After leaving Fort Gaines we drove to the Dauphin Island Sea Estuary. It is like a small Sea World but with sea life that lives around the island and in the Gulf of Mexico.
Prehistoric Horseshoe Crab. These crabs have not changed much in over 450 million years. And to top it off, they have blue blood.
No, I do not want to hold it, yuck.
Unknown type of Jelly Fish
Lobster
Morey Eel, looks like he is getting ready to eat the fish
Day 21,Got up early, packed up and headed out from Dauphin Island for Georgia. Prior to leaving the island, we stopped at a small bakery shop for a few breakfast goodies. I also bought a very cool globe of the earth that rotates all on its own. I will trey to post a photo of it soon but trust me when I say, it's very unique.
Not much of an entrance to the park. I would give it a 2.5 star out of 5 rating
We stopped for the night in Bainbridge Georgia at Walmart Super Center parking lot.
Looks like tons of fun..

Those outhouses at the fort remind me of our trip to the ghost town in Colorado. I think Scott even "tested out the facilities" there. hehe. Fun memories! Miss you guys. I'm glad to catch up on the blog :) Love you!
